Whether you are a reptile collector, a hobbyist breeder or a large commercial breeder, having at least a basic understanding of reptile genetics is very important. This is especially important if you are a reptile breeder and you are interested in producing animals with different color and pattern mutations and "morphs". On the following pages we will explain the most basic fundamentals of reptile genetics as they apply to reptile breeding. For the sake of simplicity, we will use examples related to snakes in particular and even more specifically - Ball Pythons to illustrate these principals. Though our examples of reptile genetics will be specifically related to snakes, these same genetic principals apply to all species of reptiles and amphibians.
To gain the best understanding of how reptile genetics work in relation to breeding and get a firm understanding of how these principals are applied in actual practice, we strongly recommend starting on section 1 and following each section in order. This will give you some very clear insight, as we show you how genetics build in complexity as we go. Please note that there is much more to genetics than what will be covered here and we encourage readers to continue furthering their knowledge and understanding of reptile genetics. Our goal here is to cut through a lot of the much more advanced scientific specifics of genetics and target the aspects, which are most relevant and important to selective breeding specifically. Enjoy!
